Floyd County primary election candidates now known

By Bob Steenson, bsteenson@charlescitypress.com

With the filing deadline for the primary election passed, there are candidates for three of the elected Floyd County offices that will be decided in November.

There are two candidates for county auditor, one candidate for county attorney to fill a vacancy and one candidate for Supervisor District 3 to fill a vacancy. No one has filed for the primary election for Supervisor District 1 or for county sheriff.

The county offices up for election and the candidates for the primary election are:

• Supervisor District 1 (four-year term) – no candidate.

• Supervisor District 3 (two years to fill a vacancy) – Boyd Campbell, Rudd, Republican.

• County auditor (four-year term) – Liz Hamm, Charles City, Democrat; and Morrigan Miller, Charles City, Republican.

• County attorney (two years to fill a vacancy) – Todd Prichard, Charles City, Democrat.

• County sheriff (four-year term) – no candidate.

Not having a candidate for an office for the primary doesn’t mean there won’t be candidates for the general election. Persons can file nomination papers as “no party” or as a non-party political organization (NPPO) for the general election from Aug. 5 to Aug. 28.

Sheriff Jeff Crooks, who was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, ran both times as no party.

Crooks, of Charles City, said Monday he is “definitely running again” and will file his nomination papers in August.

District 1 Supervisor Mark Kuhn has said he will not seek re-election, and Supervisor Jim Jorgensen, who was appointed to represent District 3 after the person who was elected to the seat in 2022 declined, has also said he will not run for the office. County Auditor Gloria Carr is also not seeking another term.

Federal and state candidates will also be selected during the June primary for the political parties. The filing deadline for federal and state offices for the primary was March 15.

Candidates who have filed for state legislative offices in the primary election for districts representing Floyd County are:

• Iowa House District 58 – Charley Thomson (incumbent), Charles City, Republican; and Gail Allison, Ionia, Democrat.

• Iowa House District 60 – Jane E. Bloomingdale (incumbent), Northwood, Republican; and John Rosenfeld, Clear Lake, Republican; no Democratic candidate.

• Iowa Senate District 30 – Waylon Brown (incumbent), Osage, Republican; Doug Campbell, Mason City, Republican; and Richard Lorence, Mason City, Democrat.

Candidate filing for state legislative candidates not representing a political party runs July 29 through Aug. 24.
