Evelyn Mae ‘Sedgwick’ Straw

Evelyn Mae “Sedgwick” Straw, 101, died Wednesday afternoon at home.

Private graveside services will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Greene, Iowa

Evelyn Mae Flora was born on Sept. 20, 1922 at Greene, Iowa to Paul and Ruth “Kingrey” Flora. She attended school at Greene. She worked at the Charles City Turkey factory where she met her future husband Russell Sedgwick and they were united in marriage on Dec. 23, 1944 in Grundy Center. He preceded her in death in January of 1965. Seven years later she married James Straw on April 10, 1972. He preceded her in death in April of 2020. While married she worked side by side with Russell on the farm doing turkeys, cattle and hogs. She also cleaned houses. She enjoyed crafts and painting of wood working, playing cards with her lady friends and going to the Moose Lodge for entertainment. She moved from the farm into Charles City and following an injury she recouped in the nursing home for three months and then moved into the home of her son.

Evelyn is survived by her one son Paul E. and his wife Susan Sedgwick of Charles City, three grandchildren Mike (Mary Beth) of Big Timber, Montana, Doug (Shelley) Waverly, Iowa, Brian (Melissa) Waverly, Great Grandchildren Ashley (Laton) Felton, St. Louis, MO; Ryan and his friend Cora, Billing, MT; Sophie and Ian, Waverly, Caden and Lilah of Waverly and twin Great Great Grandchildren Geordi and Ophelia Felton, St. Louis, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, sisters Norma Flora and Eleanor Reed and several nieces and nephews.
