Windy conditions make for quirky birds at NH Trapshooting Invite

NEW HAMPTON — This past Saturday was a perfect day to get outdoors and … fly a kite.

The 15 to 20-miles-per-hour southwest breeze pleasantly complemented the sunny, short sleeve-warm day. But at the annual New Hampton Trapshooting Invitational Saturday at Fredericksburg Sportman’s Club, it made for quirky birds and modest scores.

With more than 150 participants, many of whom among the top shooters in the state, there was not a single 50-of-50 perfect round.

Sydney Kuennen of the formidable all-girls Turkey Valley Pink squad, and Austin Onken who shot for New Hampton’s “White” team, both were close with 49 scores — Kuennen missed her 50th bird — and were the respective girls and boys champions.

Three male shooters — Carson Crooks of New Hampton, Cole Phillips of South Winneshiek, and Brayden Carleson of Decorah — finished second, third and fourth, respectively, as a result of a shoot off determining their placings after they all scored 48s.

Anna Holschlag of New Hampton placed second among the girls with a 46. Emily Luzum of Turkey Valley and Kennady Nie of New Hampton each scored 44s and finished third and fourth, respectively, as the result of their shoot off.

With Onken, Holshlag was part the NH “White” squad that placed first with a team score of 225. Nie was on NH’s “Red” team that, with 46 scores by Kevin Burgart and Austin Schmidt, was one shot shy in second place (224).

Crooks led NH “Black”, which placed third at 220.

Charles City senior Luke Hillegas finished a shot away from qualifying for the shoot off as his 47 led all Comet shooters. Hillegas, Jacob Greenzweig (46), Shau Landt (45), Rebecca Tierney and Brenden Kvernevig combined efforts for a team score of 210 for Charles City One.

Dylan Bilharz and Kaleb Osier both shot 46 for their Charles City squads; Nick Bucknell hit 45 birds to lead all Nashua-Plainfield shooters.
