Hot shooting, high scores at So. Winn. Invitational

NEW HAMPTON — While the inclement nature of this spring has washed out and even snowed out a succession of track, tennis and golf meets, the local high school trap shooting season has pretty much gone as according to schedule.
So needless to note, Saturday’s sweltering conditions under a blazing sun with no clouds to hide behind did nothing to impede the annual South Winneshiek Invitational at Fredericksburg Sportsman’s Club.
Much to the chagrin of the spectators huddling under any shade they could find, there was little or no breeze to serve as relief. But the shooters didn’t seem to mind as the scores were notably high among the participants.
Representing Charles City’s No. 2 squad, Leo Trebbien was near-perfect while hitting 49 of 50 clays, including a perfect 25-of-25 second round.
Nashua-Plainfield’s squad, consisting of Bobby Gipple (48), Lane Leerhoff (47), Marissa Fuerstenberg (44), Cooper Fisher (43) and Ashton Lamborn (42), recorded the highest score of the season (224) for a N-P lineup.
Charles City’s No. 1 squad, consisting of Colby Gavitt (47), Jace Landt (46), Evan Schmidtke (43), Carter West (43) and Bailee Bortz (42), also shot well as a team (221).
But no team shot better than Turkey Valley Gold, which — led by the female trio of shooters Kaylie Klimesh (50), Shaylee Brincks (50) and Alexus Ball (48) — won the invite with a team score of 237.
Other CC/N-P shooters who scored well included Nick Ritzman (48), Daniel Laube (46), Levi Robbins (44), Kaleb Osier (44), Caleb Deetz (43), Kollyn Lentz (41) and Devin Alton (40).
