Press Staff Report

Charles City graduate AJ Maloy, who won more than 100 bouts with more than 50 falls as a state-qualifying wrestler for the Comets, was recently honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association after his freshman season at Upper Iowa University.

By way of maintaining at least a 3.3 grade-point average and competing in the required amount of events, Maloy was named to the NWCA All-Academic Team.

Maloy was one of 13 Peacocks to earn the honor — a record for the program.

Other Peacocks honored were three-time All-Academic Cody Nelson (165 lbs.), two-timers Jamie Gehling (184), Brock Sorensen (197) and Logan Hopp (285); and 2018 NCAA Division II 133-lb. National Champion Josh Walker, Tanner Prochaska (149), Dalton Nelson (157), Mac Spotts (157), Tucker Black (165), Jordan Gundrum (174), National Qualifier Dalton Hahn (184) and NCAA Division II All-American Nick Baumler (197).

Maloy, a heavyweight, placed in four of the six meets he competed in — 3rd place at the Luther College Open, 3rd place at the Auggie-Adidas Open, 7th place at the BVU Open, and 7th place at the Don Parker Blugold Open.

Maloy completed the season with a 14-8 record.
