CHARLES CITY — The week before, the Charles City boys bowling team lost its first dual meet of the season after Tripoli overtook the Comets in the Baker Rotation round.

No way that was going to happen again when the Comets hosted Forest City last Friday at Comet Bowl.

With a 100-pin-plus lead after the individual round, the Comets combined efforts for a five-game score of 1,146 (229 average) in the Baker round to finish with an overall pinfall of 3,252 — more than 300 pins better than the Indians.

“I’ll have to check to see if that’s our all-time high,” Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen said of the boys’ Baker score. “It’s definitely up there as one of the best.”

Charles City junior Cael Bohlen rebounded from an off night the week before to lead all rollers with a 494 two-game series which included a 279 first game.

Koyer Kellogg (429), Nathan Girkin (399), Kaleb Cotton (395) and Landon Luft (389) rounded out the scoring for the Comet boys (7-1) as Dillan Ross’s 190-average 380 series wasn’t needed.

Gage Juhl had a two-game 430 series to pace the Tribe.

“After losing last week, our team wasn’t down,” Bohlen said. “We were pounding the pocket just like we did tonight, the only difference was we were leaving a bunch of corner pins the week before.”

The Comets girls maintained their undefeated record (8-0) with a season-high total pinfall of 2,754 — FC shot a 2,280.

Leadoff bowler Imagin McHenry led the Comets with a 395 series, followed by Heather Viers (386), Sofia Nelson (378), Sarah Mitchell (355) and Brianna Ross, whose 335 series was 1 pin better than Clair Girkin’s for Charles City’s fifth score.

Like the Comet boys, the Comet girls also had a hot Baker round that they finished with three-straight 200 games of a five-game pinfall of 905 — another season high.

With the Comets bowling so well in Baker Rotation, it was too bad that Saturday’s District Tournament which consists entirely of team Baker scores was cancelled due to pending inclement weather and treacherous travel conditions.

The Comets are due to finish the regular season this Friday (Feb. 5) on the road against North Iowa.
