Comets grounded by Eagles 62-24

Charles City girls win junior varsity game against West Hancock 36-23

Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — Early on during their non-conference girls basketball game against West Hancock on Thursday at Comet Gym, it looked as if the Charles City Comets were going to run — or fly — with the Eagles while trading fastbreak opportunities in a wide-open first quarter.

But West Hancock tightened the screws defensively in the second quarter before it scorers started to find their rythym and range on way to soaring to a 62-24 victory.

Sophomore Mallory Leerar scored a game-high 24 points and Kennedy Kelly added 16 for the Eagles (11-4).

Lydia Staudt (9 pts.), Ava Ellis (7), Delaney Ruzicka (4), Lauren Staudt (2) and Hannah Hoffman (2) accounted for the scoring for Charles City (0-12).

Comets fans did have reason to celebrate in wake of the previous junior varsity game, from which Charles City led the Eagles throughout on way to a 36-23 victory.
