‘Lefty’ Girkin paces Comet girls for first time this bowling season

Press Staff Report

INDEPENDENCE — For the first time this season, Charles City junior Claire Girkin led the Comet girls bowling team in dual-meet action with a two-game series of 332 during Tuesday’s road match against Independence at the 319 Social House.

Leading her team is not a first-time distinction for Girkin, who was Charles City’s top female bowler last season as a sophomore. But Girkin is normally a right-hander. This season she has momentarily switched to southpaw as she recovers from right-side shoulder surgery.

From the left side this season, Girkin has bowled higher (348) but Tuesday was the first time she led her team.

The hosting Mustangs won the girls dual, 2,326 to 2,149, which halted a four-game winning streak previously rolled off by the Comet girls (4-3).

Independence also won the boys meet (2,509-2,366) despite Comet sophomore Keaton Ross’s team-leading two-game series (359).

The Comet boys (3-4) and girls will travel to Panther Lanes on Friday (Jan. 20) to take on hosts Tripoli.
