Comet junior 190-pounder Leah Stewart advances to semifinals at Girls State Wrestling Tournament

CORALVILLE — Charles City junior 190-pounder Leah Stewart advanced to the semifinals of her bracket during the Thursday session of the Girls State Wrestling Tournament.

Seeded No. 6 in her bracket, Stewart pinned Decorah junior and No. 3-seed Kamryn Steines 5:36 into their quarterfinal bout.

Stewart (36-5) will face West Lyon senior Jana TerWee (25-0) in Friday’s morning session starting at 10 a.m. at Xtream Arena

Championship matches and third-place matches will start at 6 p.m.

Charles City advanced three other wrestlers to state, all of whom won their opening bouts but were eventually eliminated in the consolation brackets while each going 2-2 at the tournament.

They include freshman 100-pounder Sophia Calpito (24-20), freshman 125-pounder Edie Collins (34-15) and junior 155-pounder Destiny Kolheim (35-5).
