CHARLES CITY — You can’t fight the law of averages. It will bring you down to earth most every time.

Take a major leaguer hitting .400 through June. You can almost bet he’ll be at .350 or lower by the end of September.

The law of averages is apparently affecting Charles City senior bowler Macy Ross, but more on the flip side.

Ross, who was the 2016 Class 1A individual girls champion before placing third last season, has been bowling fairly well for the Comets but not quite “lights out”. She is one of the main reasons why Charles City is undefeated this season, but not the only as the team has benefitted from high individual series support from other bowlers.

But during Friday’s home dual meet against Sumner-Fredericksburg at Comet Bowl, Ross reminded those in attendance how much damage she can inflict on the pins once she gets locked. With a pair of 235 games, Ross led the Comets with a two-game 470 series.

“We may have to look in our record books, but that might be her best,” Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen said of the series.

Upon further review, that is Ross’ best high school series. Her previous best — a 460 series that won her a state title — set a state tournament record for girls.

The Comet girls rolled over Sumner-Fredericksburg, 2,777 to 2,046, to improve to 4-0 this season.

Though it may have taken a few weeks for Ross to get rolling, Comet senior Hunter Brockney has for the most part been on fire since the start. Already having bowled a 490 series this season and averaging around 220, Brockney rolled a 464 series against Sumner-Fredericksburg that included a 256 in the first game.

Kaleb Ross also bowled a 256 in the first game for the Comets and finished with a 443 series. Nathan Shultz rolled the third 400 series (414) for Charles City, which — with a Baker Rotation round of 1,016 — compiled a season-best total of 3,047, well ahead of Sumner-Fredericksburg’s 2,277.

Like the girls, the Comet boys are 4-0 this season.

Both of Charles City’s junior varsity teams won with freshman Joslyn Cotton leading the girls with a high series of 333 which included a 203 game; and Koyer Kellogg pacing the boys with a 365 series.

Comet bowlers won’t be back in action until Jan. 5 when the Comets host Decorah.
