It’s like signing day, but for 4-year-olds.

The inaugural Charles City Preschool Comet Commitment Day will be held Thursday, March 5, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Washington Elementary School.

“It’s kind of similar to an athletic signing day,” said Donna Lynch, secretary at Washington. “The kids can come in and actually sign a commitment letter to attend preschool here.”

Parents and incoming preschool-age children are invited to the school, where they can get a taste of “The Charles City Experience.” The event is for families with children who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 15.

“We want to be a destination school, and if we can get them now, when they’re little, we hopefully get to keep them,” Lynch said.

Families attending will walk away with a surprise. Lynch said the unique gift will follow them for their entire 13 years as students at Charles City.

Food will be provided for both children and adults at the event.

“We really tried to gear the menu toward preschoolers, too,” Lynch said.

Comet preschool is for students who are will be 4 years old by Sept. 15. Classes are held Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. There is a $30 registration fee, and a photocopy of a birth certificate, a copy of vaccination records and a current physical is needed before the first day of school.

Lynch said preschool class sizes currently are about 17 students, and all kids are welcome.

“We don’t have wait lists,”she said. “We’re a public school, we take everyone.”

Kindergarten roundup in Charles City will be held March 23.
