Deb Scharper of rural Osage has been nominated to run for Iowa Senate District 26 as the Democratic nominee, to face incumbent Waylon Brown, R-St. Ansgar.

Scharper announced her candidacy for the Iowa Senate after the March 15 filing deadline. On Wednesday, Democrats in Iowa Senate District 26 held a virtual nominating convention and Scharper received unanimous support to appear on the ballot in November.

“I am honored to receive the nomination and look forward to continuing the outreach and discussion I have had with voters across the district,” said Scharper.

“We must elect leaders in the statehouse who are willing to listen to all Iowans and work to find solutions that will make our state a better place to live, work and raise a family. I have a passion for public service and for helping families and communities.”

“Deb is a great fit for this district,” said Kurt Meyer, chairman of the Mitchell County Democrats. “Her health care background is more important than ever as our state confronts the COVID pandemic. Deb is the right person at the right time.”

Senate District 26 consists of all of Floyd, Chickasaw, Howard, Mitchell and Worth counties, and parts of Cerro Gordo and Winneshiek counties.
