Charles City Council reviews budget requests from outside agencies

The budget requests of outside agencies for fiscal year 2021-22 were reviewed and discussed during a Charles City Council planning session on Tuesday. Council members also discussed the budget for the city’s cable access fund and its fiber-to-home fund at the meeting.

By far the largest outside agency funding request came from TLC: The Learning Center. As previously reported in the Press, TLC in Charles City is aggressively seeking funding and support as it looks toward moving into the North Grand Building by next fall, then expanding its capacity and operations in the years beyond.

TLC has requested $150,000 from both the Charles City Council and the Floyd County Board of Supervisors to help cover the costs of relocating to the building at 500 North Grand Ave. Last year, TLC requested $8,000 from the city and received $5,000.

Other outside agencies requesting funding for 2021-22 include:
• Charles City Area Development, $42,000, the same amount CCAD requested and was awarded last fiscal year.
• Community Revitalization, $23,000, the same amount requested and awarded last fiscal year.
• Crisis Intervention, $1500, the same amount requested and awarded last fiscal year.
• The Charles City Cultural Equity Board, $1,000.
• The Charles City Arts Center, $6000.
• Save the Depot, $25,000.
• The Floyd County Museum, $4,440.

No action was taken and no amount was distributed or decided on for any of the organizations. The council will meet at a separate session to determine whether organizations will receive funds from the city prior to certifying the city budget.
