Mayo will no longer supply Floyd County Medical Center CEOs

The Floyd County Medical Center announced this week that it will no longer get its administrator through a contract with Mayo Clinic.

“One of the long-standing agreements between FCMC and Mayo Clinic includes contracting a Mayo Clinic administrator to serve as CEO of FCMC to help implement goals,” the Floyd County Medical Center Board of Trustees said in a written statement.

“Mayo Clinic has decided to discontinue this service,” it said. “FCMC and Mayo Clinic are in agreement that FCMC will move forward with hiring a new CEO as part of the FCMC staff.”

Mayo had been contracted to provide the medical center with a CEO since 1994. In that time there have been two Mayo-supplied administrators — Bill Faust, who served in that position for 23 years before retiring in 2017, and Rod Nordeng, who was moved from other Mayo administrative duties to take over for Faust and run the Floyd County hospital and clinic.

Mayo placed Nordeng on paid administrative leave in February without explanation. At that time, Ron James, chairman of the FCMC Board of Trustees, said the action came as a surprise. Since then he has said he cannot comment about that situation.

Assistant Administrator and Chief Financial Officer Mike Anderson has been acting administrator since that time.

Mary Jo Williamson, vice-chair of administration for Mayo Clinic, said in a statement, “We have enjoyed multiple relationships with Floyd County Medical Center over the years, and we will continue to engage with the board and medical center on multiple levels.”

In addition to providing a CEO, Mayo has an agreement with the medical center to supply cardiology physicians for a weekly clinic.

The Board of Trustees statement said that the “unwavering commitment” of medical center staff to provide high quality and safe care to patients, as well as the leadership of the board “have positioned FCMC well to adjust the CEO staffing model moving forward.”
