In two of the very few actual contests to be decided in Tuesday’s political party primary election, area voters selected Josh Mack as the Democratic nominee to run for the new Floyd County Supervisor District 2 seat, and Charley Thomson as the Republican nominee to run for the new Iowa House District 58 seat that will represent most of Floyd County.

Both men are Charles City residents and will be running for districts that have been newly created — the supervisor seat because of a decision voters made last year to divide the county into three supervisor districts, and the Iowa House seat because of redistricting following the 2020 Census.

Both candidates tallied decisive victories.

Mack, who is also a member of the Charles City Board of Education, defeated Stewart Dalton by a vote of 112 to 66, a 62.2% majority, in the two precincts that make up Supervisor District 2 – Charles City Precinct 2 and Charles City Precinct 3/North St. Charles Township.

Mack will face Republican Dennis Keifer of Charles City in the general election Nov. 8. Keifer, running unopposed for the Republican nomination, received 250 votes.

In the Iowa House District 58 Republican primary, Thomson faced two other opponents but still came away with more than half the votes.

Thomson received 1,140 votes, or 55.2%, while Jim Wright of Sumner received 616 votes (29.8%) and Sean Galleger of Fairbank received 309 (15.0%).
