Thelma Irene Kock

Thelma Irene Kock, 91, of Greene, passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2020 at Valley View in Greene.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020. Those in attendance will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and to please wear a face mask; thank you for your understanding. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford, Iowa at a later date.

Thelma Irene (Kielsmeier) Kock, the daughter of Orville and Mildred (Daake) Kielsmeier, was born Dec. 4, 1928 on the family farm in rural Floyd County, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Rockford High School.

On June 22, 1947, Thelma was united in marriage to Sylvan Charles Kock at Flood Creek United Methodist Church. The couple settled on their farm near Rockford (which they farmed together for 25 years) and were blessed with four daughters: Karen, Carma, Brenda and Sherrine. Thelma hauled grain, milked cows and raised chickens working side by side with Sylvan on the farm. She also drove delivery trucks for Hoover’s Hatchery, drove special education students to and from school and later in life delivered Winnebagos with Sylvan throughout the United States. Thelma and Sylvan were caretakers of Riverside Cemetery in Rockford for several years and took great pride in mowing and upkeep.

Thelma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church (serving on the council, circle chairman and Financial Secretary) and was very active in her community. She was the first woman to serve on the Rockford City Council (serving for 12 years with 10 as Mayor pro tem), helped form the Community Action Group, active in NIACOG, a charter member of the Manor Board (serving as President for a number of years), member of the North Iowa Regional Housing Authority, Floyd County Board of Health, active with the Charles City Hospital Auxiliary as a Pink Lady and was Women’s Club President.

Thelma enjoyed gardening, watching Soap Opera’s (especially As the World Turns) and spending time with her family. She will be missed greatly by all those who loved her.

Living family members include her three daughters: Carma Hillman of Marble Rock, Brenda Dight of Rudd and Sherrine Bundt (Kelly Noss) of Dougherty; son-in-law, Rob Younie of Jefferson; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a special God-Child Renee Knoop of Johnston; two sisters: Betty Wedeking of Marble Rock and Lucille (Eugene) Meier of Rockford; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 70 years, Sylvan; daughter, Karen Younie; two sons-in-law: Danny Hillman and Dick Dight; grandson, Kyle Dight; grandson-in-law, Robert Shindelar; and sister, Arlene Carney.
