CHARLES CITY — Instant offense can come in a variety of ways.

Among the more popular are turning turnovers into easy buckets, and bombardiering with deadly accuracy from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Clear Lake Lions didn’t take any chances so they decided to utilize both methods while busting out of the gate early and never letting up on the gas while defeating Charles City 78-30 to open the girls basketball season in the Comets’ new competition gym on Tuesday

The Lions took a commanding 30-4 lead after the first quarter before heading into intermission up 55-22. In that half alone, Clear Lake connected on 10 3-point shots.

Junior Gretchen Jones started the onslaught when she hit three of those first-half treys to help the Lions pounce to an 18-0 lead. Jones would score all of her 11 points in the first half.

Senior Emily Snelling would lead all scorers with 17 points with Clear Lake teammates Jessica Faber (15 points) and Jordan Barragy (13 points) also achieving double-figure scoring.

It wasn’t until more than five minutes into the game that the Comets got on their new scoreboard when sophomore Jodie Sindinger banked in a 10-footer.

Sindlinger ended up with 10 points to lead the Comets.

Freshman guard Olivia Zuspan had 7 points, including two 3-pointers, and seniors Gen Wandro and Kelsi Crooks had a double-figure rebound nights for the Comets, who as a whole will look to rebound in their next game away against Garner-Hayfield Ventura on Monday (Nov. 28).
