CC freshman Zuspan reaches new heights in HJ at Decorah Relays

Comet senior Martin wins both throwing events

Staff Report

DECORAH —When someone starts out hot, bets usually hedge on them coming back down to earth.

But at the rate Charles City freshman Olivia Zuspan is rising in the high jump, she might disappear into the stratosphere.

Relatively new to the event, Zuspan cleared 5 feet for the first time of her budding high school career to win the high jump Thursday during the Decorah Girls Relays.

In a matter of several weeks, Zuspan has improved a half foot.

Comet senior Sara Martin has yet to reach and eclipse her personal-best in the discus, but she got a little close with a season-best throw of 116 feet, 10 inches for one of two her firsts at the meet.

Martin also won the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 3 inches.

Overall, the Comets placed third in the eight-team meet with 82 team points.

Hosting Decorah won it with 187 points, well ahead of runner-up Waverly-Shell Rock with 101 points.
