WAVERLY — Don’t know if this still applies to “new math”, but there’s an “old school” shortcut when it comes to multiples of 9.

Whatever numbers 2-10 are multiplied by 9 they will produce a result whose double-digit sum will add up to 9. Like 6X9 = 54 and 5+4 = 9.

Taking in account that the North Central Tennis Conference Tournament had a grand total of 9 singles and doubles brackets that each awarded 6 team points to the winners, Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks winning total of 54 indicated a perfect win.

Go-Hawk singles players Madi Overmann (No. 1), Hannah Folkerts (No. 2), Ashlyn Hughes (No. 3), Olivia Phillips (No. 4), Katie Wichman (No. 5) and Sadie Hansen (No. 6); and double teams Overmann-Wichman (No. 1), Phillips-Folkerts (No. 2) and Hansen-Hughes (No. 3) all won their brackets during Saturday’s day-long tournament played at Wartburg College and Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

Bracket placements were determined strictly by games won in five 10-game sets for singles and five 8-game sets for doubles. By doing a little more math, you could better see how dominant the Go-Hawks were.

Out of 50 games in singles, all W-SR players recorded more than 40 wins with Hansen and Wichman winning 49 and 47, respectively. Out of 40 games in doubles, Hansen and Hughes won 39 and Phillips and Folkerts won 38.

Decorah, which placed second in all brackets except No. 3 doubles, was runner-up with 42 team points, followed by Clear Lake (39), Osage (24), Charles City (18) and Oelwein (12).

Charles City junior Jodie Sindlinger, who is amid her first season at the Comets No. 1 singles player, placed fourth in the No. 1 singles bracket.

The No. 3 Charles City doubles team of sophomore Joclyn Cotton and freshman Kayla Kellogg placed fourth in their bracket.

In singles, Charles City junior Taylor Walters (No. 2), Kellogg (No. 3), Cotton (No. 5) and sophomore Jacie Wink (No. 6) all placed fifth.

The No. 2 doubles team of Walters and senior Mackenzie Wilson also placed fifth.

All of Charles City’s junior or senior participants eligible for the NCTC All-Academic Team — Amy Boggess, Sindlinger, Walters and Wilson — were honored.

Decorah’s Carina Yee and Clear Lake’s Gretche Jones were named the tournament co-Athletes of the Year, and Holly Rubin of Oelwein received the Sportsmanship Award.
