Charles City senior Ian Collins takes off for what would be a leap of 23 feet, 1/4 inch during the Class 3A Boys Long Jump at the State Track and Field Championships. The effort was just a 1/2-inch shy of matching Carlisle senior Archer Ogbourne’s state-winning leap.
The day before, Collins won his second-straight state high jump title by matching his and the school’s all-time best by clearing a height of 6 feet, 9 inches. Collins was also going for his second-straight LJ state title.
