Comet girls shoot season low in golf meet loss to Vikings

Press Staff Report

DECORAH — Par-3’s are often trickier than they first appear.

Take last Monday’s Northeast Iowa Conference girls golf meet between Charles City and hosting Decorah.

Of the 17 varsity or junior varsity participants from both schools, only two made par on both of the Par-3 opportunities presented on the front nine of Oneota Golf and Country.

One of which was Charles City junior Mya Rimrod, who emerged clean on holes No. 2 and No. 7. It helped the first-year varsity golfer attain a personal-low nine-hole score of 49 to pace all the Comets.

Decorah junior Maria Riveros also parred holes No. 2 and No. 7, as well as several others, while compiling a medalist score of 39.

With senior Alex Wohlers (51), senior Shelby Effle (52), and senior Claire Girkin and freshman Kinleigh Bahe both carding 54s, the Comets shot a season-low nine-hole team score of 207.

Though Charles City’s 2 through 6 in the varsity lineup scored 18 shots lower than Decorah’s 2 through 6, it was Riveros’s medalist score that paved the way for the 8-shot victory for the Vikings (199).
