Lilly Luft places 4th at Women’s National Wrestling Championships

Charles City’s Lilly Luft takes down Vinton-Shellsburg’s Chloe Sanders in the 130-pound championship bout of the 2023 Girls State Wrestling Championships. Luft, a three-time state champion, recently place fourth in her division at the 2023 Women’s National (Freestyle Wrestling) Championships.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Charles City senior Lilly Luft placed fourth in her division at the USA Wrestling/United State Marine Corps Women’s National Championships held April 14-16 at The Podium in Spokane, Washington.

Wrestling freestyle while competing in the U20 62-kilogram (136.687 pounds) division, Luft defeated Chanya Tipmanee of New York with a 10-0 technical fall in the first round, and then pinned Kaidance Gerg of Idaho 4:18 into their second-round bout.

In the third round, Luft suffered a fall defeat to Arizona resident SaVannah Cosme (5:07), before bouncing back with three consecutive wins over Aileen Lester of Arkansas (2:36 fall), Allyssa Johnson of North Dakota (10-0 TF) and Netavia Wickson of Illinois (8-7 decision).

In the third-place match, Luft lost to New Hampshire resident Skylar Hattendorf (5:44 fall).

Cosme lost to California resident Adaugo Nwachukwu (3:00 fall) in the U20 62-kilo championship bout. Nwachukwu wrestles for Iowa Wesleyan and is an NAIA national champion.

Luft recently finished her high school wrestling career with the Charles City Comets while winning her third-straight state title.

She will continue her scholastic wrestling career at the University of Iowa.
