Charles City firefighters spent about 45 minutes putting out a garage fire in the northwest part of town Wednesday afternoon.
The Fire Department responded to a 911 report of a garage on fire at 103 Spriggs St. a little before 2 p.m. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from one side of a residential detached garage, near the roof line, said Fire Chief Eric Whipple.
The firefighters didn’t find any smoke or fire inside the building, but after removing siding and sheeting from the exterior of the garage where the smoke was coming out they found a small fire that was quickly extinguished.
“Further inspection with thermal imaging and some additional removal of material from the garage ensured that the fire was completely extinguished with no further fire spread,” Whipple said. “The fire was deemed under control within 15 minutes of arrival.”
No injuries were reported and no other buildings were damaged.
According to Floyd County Assessor online records, the home is owned by Keith Dykstra, Whipple said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the fire started on the exterior at the base of the garage near the slab, Whipple said. There was minor fire and water damage to a portion of the garage.
The Fire Department was back at the station and in service around 2:41 p.m.
The CCFD responded with about 15 firefighters and two engines. They were assisted by the 911 Communications Center, and at the scene by the Charles City Police Department, AMR Ambulance, Colwell Fire Department, and the Floyd Fire Department.
